Resources and Presentations from the Summit:

Organizational Basics - Nonprofit Nuts & Bolts Powerpoint

On January 16 2015, Washington Food Coalition is hosting our second annual Winter Food Summit at the Greater Tacoma Convention and Trade Center. This all-day ‘mini-conference’ will be an excellent opportunity for our member agencies to come together to tackle issues of hunger. We will have two learning tracks so attendees can tailor their experience according to their interests:

Food Bank Certification and Step Up Your Game

Food Bank Certification learning track:

This certification course was developed in 2014 with our first graduates at the 2014 WFC Annual Conference Meeting the Future. Those who choose this track will participate in 5 focused workshops that conclude with a brief competency exam. Those who complete this track will acquire a certificate to display showing their capability as food bank manager.

Non-profit Basics:

For professionals new to the nonprofit sector, this session offers an overview of the idiosyncrasies of the nonprofit world. Board-staff relations, management of volunteers, fundraising, and budgeting are unique to the nonprofit world. How does a nonprofit organization measure its success when the “bottom line” is not calculated in dollars and cents? Join Joe Gruber with the University District Food Bank, and WFC’s own Julie Washburn to expire some of the basics of operating as a nonprofit organization.

Food Banking 101:

No matter your experience with running a food bank, this session led by Bonnie Baker of Northwest Harvest offers information useful to ensuring your success in meeting the need of hungry individuals. If you recently started a food bank this information will provide a strong baseline for your future work. Those who have been food banking for a while should join in to ensure you know all that you can to succeed!

Volunteer Management:

A well-trained volunteer manager is key to the success of a volunteer program. As nonprofit agencies face the prospect of significant funding cuts, the need for well-managed and well-trained volunteers will be more critical than ever. Join Suzy McNeilly from the Council on Aging & Human Services in Whitman County to expand your skills in identifying volunteer resources and recruiting, assigning, training, supervising, evaluating, and motivating volunteers.

Forms Training:

Learn what it takes to successfully complete your monthly activity reports. Experts and staff from these organizations will be on hand to walk you through how to complete their report forms and answer any questions you may have. Find out what data your agency should be tracking; learn best practices plus tips and tricks to complete accurate and consistent reports. We are excited for the broad aray of skills and experiences brought by our presenters: Stephanie Hsu, Northwest Harvest; Brooke Henderson, Food Lifeline; James Scovel, WSDA; Trish Twomey, Washington Food Coalition.

Food
 Safety:

Food safety is a key component of public health. Helena Barton from the Washington State Department of Health will prensent basics on the practice of food safety in food banks and meal programs. Information will be presented on the importance of knowing key components of the WA Food Code, storing food properly (dry and refrigerator/frozen), handling Potentially Hazardous Foods, What “Sell by” and “Use by” dates mean, the importance of hand washing, and what to do when a volunteer is ill and so much more!
